Beginner’s Guide to Skin Flooding for Beautiful Skin
Skin flooding layers lightweight hydration think toners, essences, and serums before sealing with moisturizer. Learn the exact steps, who it’s best for, and common mistakes to avoid.
What is “skin flooding”?
Skin flooding is a simple technique that saturates your skin with multiple moisturizers, water-based layers (humectants) and then locks that water in with an emollient/occlusive gel. In short, you’re giving your skin a tall drink of water and then putting a lid on it so it doesn’t evaporate.
Why it works
First, humectants like glycerin , hyaluronic acid , and panthenol pull water into the top layers of skin. Next, emollients and occlusives such as squalane , ceramides , and shea butter smooth gaps and reduce transepidermal water loss . As a result, skin looks plumper, feels softer, and makeup sits better.
The step-by-step routine (AM or PM)
Step 1: Cleanse gently Start with a mild, pH-balanced cleanser. Pat until damp , not dry water on the skin boosts humectants.
Step 2: Mist or apply a watery toner. Add a hydrating toner/essence. Think of this as your first hydration layer.
Step 3: Humectant serum Apply a serum with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or sodium PCA . If you have very dehydrated skin, you can even use two thin serums, one after the other.
Step 4: Seal with moisturizer While the skin is still slightly dewy, use a moisturizer rich in ceramides or squalane to lock everything in.
Optional Step 5 (PM only): A thin occlusive finish If you’re dry or live in a cold climate, finish with a light occlusive layer (eg, a pea-size of ointment) on dry zones not the whole face if you’re acne-prone.
Skin flooding vs. slugging
Both aims to prevent water loss; However, slugging uses a thick occlusive layer (like petrolatum) as the star, while skin flooding prioritizes watery hydration first and then a lighter seal. Therefore, flooding is often more versatile for daily use.
Skin flooding is beginner-friendly, fast, and effective . Layer light hydration on damp skin, then seal it in. With consistent use and smart tweaks for your skin type you’ll see a softer, bouncier complexion without overhauling your entire routine.
