How Should You Take Care of a New Tattoo?

Getting inked is an exciting and personal experience, but what you do after getting your tattoo is just as important as choosing the design or artist. Proper tattoo aftercare ensures your new piece of body art heals cleanly, stays vibrant, and avoids infection.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to take care of a tattoo right after getting it—including expert tips aligned with top dermatologists and tattoo professionals.

🧼 Step 1: Wash Your Tattoo Properly

How do you take care of a tattoo right after getting it? It starts with the first wash.

Once your tattoo artist removes the bandage—usually after 2 to 6 hours—gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented, mild soap. Avoid harsh or exfoliating products, which can damage the sensitive skin and cause irritation.

🔹 Wash twice a day for the first two weeks to remove plasma, excess ink, and bacteria.
🔹 Use your hands (not a washcloth or loofah) to clean the area.
🔹 Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Avoid rubbing.

💧 Step 2: Moisturize With Tattoo-Safe Products

After washing, apply a thin layer of a tattoo aftercare balm or unscented moisturizer. Dermatologists recommend avoiding petroleum-based products unless directed by your artist. Products like Mad Rabbit Tattoo Balm are specifically designed to soothe and hydrate healing ink.

🔹 Moisturize 2-3 times a day for the first 7–10 days.
🔹 Keep the layer light—over-moisturizing can suffocate the tattoo and lead to breakouts.

☀️ Step 3: Avoid the Sun and Water

One of the biggest mistakes people make after getting a tattoo is exposing it to harsh environments too soon.

❌ Do NOT:

  • Go swimming (pools, lakes, oceans) for at least 2 weeks
  • Take long baths or soak the tattoo
  • Expose the tattoo to direct sunlight
  • Apply sunscreen during the healing phase—keep it covered with clothing instead

A sunburn can permanently fade or distort your tattoo. After the healing phase, always apply SPF 30+ when exposed to the sun.

🩹 Step 4: Understand Normal Healing Symptoms

Flaking, scabbing, and itching are completely normal. These are signs that your skin is regenerating and your tattoo is settling in.

🔹 Do not pick or scratch scabs—this can cause ink loss or infection.
🔹 Light peeling is expected around days 3–7.
🔹 If redness or swelling persists after a week, contact your tattoo artist or a dermatologist.

Follow Your Tattoo Artist’s Instructions

Your tattoo artist may give you specific aftercare tips based on your skin type, tattoo placement, or the style of ink used. Whether it’s using a particular product or keeping the tattoo wrapped overnight with second skin, follow their instructions exactly

They’ve seen what works—and what doesn’t.
