Digital vs Paper Stamp Cards: What Changes When You Switch

4 min read

Paper cards are simple, but they have limits. What a digital card changes for you and your customers, and how to make the switch.

The trouble with paper cards

Paper stamp cards are familiar and cheap to print, which is why so many businesses start with them. Their problems show up later:

  • They get lost, washed or left at home, so customers lose their progress and give up
  • Stamps are easy to copy, and you can't tell a real card from a forged one
  • You don't know who your regulars are or how often they come
  • There's no way to reach card holders when you have something to tell them

What a digital card changes

A digital card lives on the customer's phone, which they rarely forget. Each stamp is added by scanning their QR code, so it can't be faked with a rubber stamp.

You also get what paper can't give you: a dashboard with your members, stamps given and rewards redeemed, and a way to send a message to everyone who has your card.

What customers need

Customers need a smartphone and a free app. With Beewa, they scan your Join QR once, create an account, and your card appears on their phone. After that, they just show their QR code when they pay.

Some customers will still prefer paper at first. That's fine during the switch; see below.

What it costs

Paper cards cost little per card, but they cost you in other ways: reprints, stamps that go missing, and forged cards redeemed at full value.

A digital program is a monthly or yearly subscription. The question to ask is whether a few extra visits per member each year, plus a direct way to reach them, cover that cost.

How to switch without losing anyone

Honour the paper cards customers already have. When a regular joins the digital card, count the stamps on their paper card and add them in the first scan; in Beewa you can add several stamps at once.

Keep a short overlap, for example one month, when both work, then retire the paper cards. Put the Join QR next to the till so the switch happens naturally at checkout.

Summary

  • Paper cards are cheap, but they get lost, can be copied and tell you nothing
  • Digital cards stay on the customer's phone and give you data and a way to reach members
  • Customers need a smartphone and a free app
  • Honour existing paper cards by adding their stamps on the first scan
