How to Start a Loyalty Program for a Small Business

5 min read

A loyalty program doesn't need to be complicated. Six steps to set up one that customers actually use.

1. Decide what the program is for

Before choosing rewards, decide what you want to change. Most small businesses want one of three things: regulars visiting more often, customers spending a little more per visit, or existing customers bringing in new ones.

The answer shapes everything else. Visit frequency suits a stamp card, spend suits points, and new customers call for a referral program. You can do more than one, but start with the goal that matters most.

2. Choose stamps or points

Stamps count visits or items: ten coffees, six haircuts. They're easy to understand at a glance, which makes them ideal when most purchases are similar.

Points follow the amount spent, so a large order earns more than a small one. They suit businesses where baskets vary a lot, like restaurants, shops or florists.

3. Set a reward worth coming back for

The reward should feel generous but stay affordable. A common approach is to give away one of your most popular items or services after a set number of purchases: a free coffee after ten, a free cut after six.

Make the first reward reachable. If your regulars come weekly, a card that takes eight to ten visits keeps the goal in sight. A card that takes a year to fill is easy to forget.

  • Pick a reward customers already want, not leftover stock.
  • Check the cost: the reward's cost divided by the purchases needed to earn it.
  • Write the reward in plain words, for example "10 coffees = 1 free coffee".

4. Make joining effortless

Most loyalty programs fail at the counter, not in the planning. If joining takes more than a few seconds, busy customers won't bother.

Put a QR code where customers wait, and have staff mention it in one sentence at checkout: "Would you like to collect stamps? Just scan this." With Beewa, the Join QR installs the app and adds your card in one step.

5. Stay in touch, but not too often

A loyalty program gives you a direct line to your best customers. Use it for things they'll value: a new menu, a seasonal product, free slots on a quiet day.

Resist sending something every day. A message or two a month, with a clear reason and an end date, keeps people reading.

6. Measure and adjust

After a month, look at three numbers: how many customers joined, how many stamps or points you gave, and how many rewards were redeemed.

If few people join, make the QR code more visible and remind staff to mention it. If nobody reaches the reward, it may be too far away. If rewards are redeemed quickly but visits don't rise, the card may be too easy to fill.
