Stamps or Points? Choosing the Right Loyalty Card

4 min read

The two most common loyalty models, explained with examples, and how to pick the one that fits your business.

How a stamp card works

A stamp card counts visits or items. Every purchase adds a stamp, and after a set number the customer gets a reward: ten coffees, then one free.

Its strength is simplicity. Customers understand it instantly, and progress is visible at a glance, which is motivating in itself.

How points work

With points, customers earn according to how much they spend, for example one point for every €10. The reward costs a set number of points.

Points are fairer when purchases vary a lot: a customer who spends €80 earns more than one who spends €8.

When stamps are the better choice

Choose stamps when:

  • Most visits look alike: a coffee, a haircut, a wash
  • Your main products or services have similar prices
  • You want the simplest possible message at the counter

Cafés, barbers, car washes and personal trainers usually do well with stamps.

When points are the better choice

Choose points when:

  • Basket sizes vary a lot from visit to visit
  • You sell both small and large items, like a single stem and a wedding bouquet
  • You want bigger spenders to reach the reward sooner

Restaurants, florists, shops and beauty salons with varied services often prefer points.

Setting the numbers

For stamps, think about how often a regular customer visits in a typical month, and set the card so the reward arrives within one to three months.

For points, work out what the reward costs you and how much a customer needs to spend to earn it. Many businesses aim to give back a small share of what customers spend, such as 5 to 10 percent, but the right number depends on your margins.

Can you change your mind?

In Beewa you choose stamps or points during setup, and you can switch until your first customer joins. After that the type stays fixed, so nobody loses their progress.

Whichever you choose, you can still adjust the reward and use campaigns and referrals in the same way.
